Recently, a returning client who placed a custom sampling order with us back in 2024 came back for a new quote.

 

At that time, his order was for 1 kg of custom incense sticks with the following formula: Australian sandalwood 60%, cedar 20%, clove 10%, frankincense 10%. The price was USD 100/kg.

 

This time, he wanted to adjust the formula: aged Australian  sandalwood 60%, cedar 30%, clove 5%, frankincense 5%. Our new quote was USD 150/kg.

 

His question was direct: “Why is it so much more expensive?”

Why Is Custom Sampling Expensive?

Here is the cost breakdown for sampling:

 

1. Material cost: Even for just 30 sample sticks, we must prepare enough raw materials. The leftover material cannot be used for other orders, and this wastage must be included in the sample cost.

2. Labor cost: Sampling cannot be done on a semi-automated production line — we must assign a dedicated craftsman to hand-blend and hand-make the samples. That craftsman may spend the entire day working on just this one sampling order.

3. Adjustment cost: Each sampling requires fine-tuning the formula ratio, moisture content, and burn performance to ensure the sample truly reflects the final product quality.

 

So, USD 40 for 30 sample sticks — most of that is labor and time, while the material cost is almost negligible.

Because the main cost of bulk orders comes from raw materials. Prices of different grades of aromatic materials can vary by several times or even tens of times. The raw material cost directly determines the final bulk order price.

 

In simple terms:

 

•  Sampling cost ≈ labor cost (fixed)

•  Bulk order cost ≈ raw material cost (variable)

 

This explains why this customer paid USD 40 for 30 sample sticks, yet the per-kg price of his two orders ranged from USD 100 to USD 150 — different raw materials lead to different pricing.

 

Why Is Small-Batch More Expensive Than Large-Volume?

•  2 kg order: USD 150/kg

•  5 kg order: USD 112/kg

 

Why such a big difference?

 

Because material loss/wastage is a fixed cost:

The leftover material cannot be used for other orders. When this fixed loss cost is spread over fewer finished products, the per-kg price naturally rises.

 

That is also why our standard MOQ is 5 kg — spreading the loss cost over more finished products results in a more reasonable unit price. However, if 5 kg is more than you need, we can also do 2–3 kg, though the unit price will be higher.
